Enhancing Acoustic Ambiance at Wakuda Restaurant, Marina Bay Sands

Creating an Acoustic Haven for Fine Dining

A restaurant’s ambiance is as crucial as its culinary offerings, especially in a high-end setting like Wakuda Restaurant at Marina Bay Sands. Opened in April 2022, this restaurant, led by renowned chef Tetsuya Wakuda, offers an exquisite Japanese omakase dining experience. To complement its fine dining, the restaurant has integrated Timberix Microperforated panels to manage sound reverberations, ensuring a serene and comfortable environment for guests.

Project Overview and Key Stakeholders

About Wakuda Restaurant

Wakuda is a Japanese restaurant founded by chef Tetsuya Wakuda, who also owns the two-star Michelin restaurant Waku Ghin. The restaurant, located in the grand lobby of the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel, is designed to provide an immersive dining experience where the ambiance plays a pivotal role¹. To enhance the acoustic environment, Timberix™ Microperforated V3.6/1.8/0.5 panels were installed to effectively manage reverberations and create a quiet, intimate setting for diners.

Key Contributors to the Project

The project was a collaborative effort among several industry experts. Kyriacou Architects led the architectural design, Sennen Design served as the consultant, and Kingsmen Projects Pte. Ltd. acted as the main contractor overseeing the build. Aural-Aid Pte. Ltd., a specialist in acoustic solutions, managed the installation of the Timberix Microperforated panels².

Innovative Acoustic Solutions for a Unique Dining Experience

Design Specifications for Acoustic Panels

The Timberix™ Microperforated panels used in Wakuda Restaurant have approximately 500,000 perforations per square meter. These perforations are designed to attenuate sound through resonance absorption and an acoustic substrate placed behind the panels. Finished in eucalyptus veneer with a matte lacquer application, these panels contribute to both the acoustic and aesthetic qualities of the restaurant².

Impact on Dining Ambiance and Guest Comfort

By managing sound reverberations, the Timberix™ Microperforated panels help maintain a quiet and comfortable dining atmosphere, crucial for the omakase experience. This acoustic enhancement ensures that guests can enjoy their meals in peace, free from unwanted noise disruptions.

Sustainability and Artistic Collaboration

Eco-Friendly Material Choices and Customization

The Timberix™ panels used in the restaurant are not only functional but also reflect sustainable practices. The eucalyptus veneer finish aligns with eco-friendly building standards, supporting Marina Bay Sands’ commitment to sustainability³. As a bespoke project, Timberix collaborated with Japanese artist Jun Inoue to have his artwork painted on the acoustic panels. These panels were flown to Japan for painting before being installed in the restaurant, with the artwork titled “The Ingredients That Arrived” providing a unique aesthetic touch to the dining space.

Benefits of Sustainable and Artistic Acoustic Solutions

Incorporating sustainable materials and artistic elements into the acoustic design adds a layer of exclusivity and sophistication to Wakuda Restaurant. This approach demonstrates a balance between aesthetic appeal, sustainability, and acoustic performance, enhancing the overall guest experience.

Collaborative Efforts and Long-Term Impact on Hospitality Spaces

Roles of Architects, Contractors, and Acoustic Experts

The success of the acoustic environment at Wakuda Restaurant was the result of a well-coordinated effort among key professionals. Kyriacou Architects provided the design framework, Sennen Design ensured the project met all acoustic requirements, Kingsmen Projects Pte. Ltd. managed the construction, and Aural-Aid Pte. Ltd. executed the installation of the acoustic solutions².

Enhancing the Omakase Experience Through Superior Acoustics

By focusing on acoustic excellence, Wakuda Restaurant enhances the omakase dining experience, providing a serene and intimate atmosphere where guests can fully immerse themselves in the culinary journey. The integration of Timberix™ Microperforated panels not only improves sound quality but also adds to the restaurant’s unique aesthetic appeal¹.
