How to Choose Timberix

Your complete guide to choosing Timberix panels!

Timberix acoustic panels are primarily made of wood and comes in different finishes. They are installed in places where a hard surface finish is required, yet achieves acoustical absorption. This is preferable when a soft surface such as acoustic foam or fabric system is not preferred. Timberix can help to reduce echoes and increase speech intelligibility when installed correctly.

In this guide, we attempt to discuss the different types of Timberix panels and also how they are used to achieve the desired acoustical effect; the amount of reverberation in the room.

Grooved Panels

TIMBERIX grooved panel reduces echoes by trapping and diffracting sound in the grooves and perforation found on the surface. The sound that passes through the perforation is further absorbed by an acoustic substrate such as fibreglass or mineral wool, which reduces reverberation in the room. Smaller grooves are better at attenuating high frequency sounds, whereas larger grooves are better at controlling low frequency sounds.

Perforated Panels

TIMBERIX perforated panel is made with a 2-layer perforation structure, which traps and diffracts sound in the holes. The sound that passes through the perforation is further absorbed by an acoustic substrate such as fibreglass or mineral wool, which reduces reverberation in the room. The perforation comes in many sizes ranging from 1mm to 25mm. Smaller holes are better at attenuating low frequency sounds, whereas larger
holes are better at reducing high frequency sounds.

Sound Absorption Data

We have tested both the grooved and perforated panel. Here are some of the common patterns used and their sound absorption coefficient charts.

Grooved Panels 14/2

Grooved Panels 28/4

Perforated Panels 8-8-1

Perforated Panels 16-16-6

Finishes Available

Melamine

This is the most economical finish. Melamine is a type of material that is resilient. It can be printed to look like natural wood veneer or in a solid colour. When looked carefully, you can see the pixels of the print.

Veneer

Natural or engineered wood veneer is a premium finish. The veneer can be lacquered with gloss, satin, or matte finish. Veneers are used in places where a good-quality look is required, such as concert halls.

Paint

When a solid colour finish is desired, any Pantone colour paint can be sprayed on. Paint when compared to solid-colour melamine will look more premium. The paint specular can be in gloss, satin, or matte.

Special Patterns

CNC Cut

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cutting allows the Timberix panels to be cut into intricate shapes that would not be possible with traditional power tools! Examples of cuts include logo cutting, unique shapes, or even parametric designs.

Laser Cut

Laser cutting is used for 2 purposes. First, it allows thin material, not more than 9mm, to be cut. This method is cheaper and faster than CNC cutting. Another use is for the laser to burn designs onto the surface, such as a company logo or wording.

Putting it all together!

Ultimately, choosing the type of Timberix panel is a very personal choice. It depends on the acoustic requirements of the space and also the visual coherence that you are looking for. For example, to give a ceiling the appearance of a taller height, you might choose Timberix grooved panels to be installed with the grooves vertical on the wall. Whereas, if you are looking to retain as much of the natural veneer look of the surface as possible, you might opt for micro-perforated Timberix of size 2-2-0.5, where the perforations are almost invisible from a distance away.
